The Kansas Kids

In December of 2022, Wild Spirit was asked to take in five high-content wolfdogs in need of urgent rescue after their owner passed away. They were already beyond their maximum capacity, with no open enclosures for intakes, but wanted nothing more than to save these animals’ lives.

Thankfully, they were not alone in this endeavor and in just days, a team of individuals came together from across the country to not only retrieve these animals but build them new enclosures too!

After arriving to pick them up, it was clear that they were all experiencing high levels of stress, likely from living in 10’x10′ kennels in addition to the commotion on site.  Thanks to the experience and teamwork of everyone involved, the process of getting animals out of their enclosures, vetted, and into transport vans flew by at record pace. Within a matter of hours, these five were on their way to a happy ending.

Before leaving, the team learned of three additional high-content animals living on site, one of whom passed away before rescue became an option. This surprise lead to Wild Spirit committing to come back for these animals as soon as they could build additional enclosures, which ended up being in May of 2023. Seven animals ended up leaving with Wild Spirit to start new lives.

Since arriving at Wild Spirit, these animals have flourished in their new massive enclosures, sharing their lives with their wolfdog companions and human caretakers, accepting love in their own time and on their own terms.

This Rescue Almost Didn't Happen

Due to the most harsh winter their area of New Mexico had seen in the last 30 years, enclosure construction was nearly impossible. Had it not been for the generous donations received, these animals may not be alive today.

A Special Shout Out

This was the 11th, and final, rescue mission of 2022 for Wild Spirit, with a total of 22 individual animals saved as a result of their efforts. They absolutely could not have done this without the incredible support of multiple individuals within the wolfdog  community, who came together to assist in the on-site capture, vetting, and transport portion of the mission in addition to the others that helped aide Wild Spirit in putting up new enclosures. The incredible feats we accomplish when we work together for a common goal are limitless.

A genuine thank you to everyone who was involved in this rescue effort. It took a village but the change in their environments have enabled these Kansas Kids to thrive in the best possible way.
